Modeligo - Location

HISTORY

On 7 January 1986, fifty one people attended a meeting in Modeligo National School to discuss the purchase of a playing field. At this meeting the following committee was elected.

Following many committee meetings a second public meeting held on 20 October 1986 gave the go ahead for a field to be purchased and subsequently the Inch was purchased from Hughie O'Keeffe.

    Public meeting called to discuss the purchase of a community playing field
  • October 20, 1986
    Public meeting voted to go ahead with the purchase. This was Fr. Russell's last meeting with us.
  • October 29, 1986
    Pat Denn took over as Chairman.
  • November 10, 1986
    House to House collection to fund the purchase of the field begins and eventually yields the wonderful sum of £15,186.
  • April 1988
    Development of field begins.
  • April 1989
    Field used for first time for matches.
  • March 1990
    Building of hall/dressing romms proposed.
  • April 26, 1990
    Second house to house collection to fund the building of the centre begins. This time £8,007 is realised - another great effort.
  • December 8, 1990
    Confined 500 Non-Stop Draw - £12,055 made.
  • January 25, 1991
    Fr. Michael Russell RIP.
  • October 1991
    Lottery Grant of £3,000 received.
  • November 23, 1991
    Work on Centre begins - site dug out.
  • June 17, 1992
    Confined 400 Non-Stop Draw - £8,140 made.
  • December 1992
    First use of centre for parish sale of work.
  • June 6, 1993
    "Is there £1,000 under your square foot" - draw to fund maple floor brings in £7,060 with 1,684 x £5 tickets sold.
  • November 1993
    Maple floor in place at a cost of £4,422.
  • February 4, 1994
    Official opening of Community Centre by His Lordship, Bishop William Lee.
  • May 1, 1994
    Dog night at Youghal Greyhound Track. £10,000 made following six weeks of hard work and 3,288 X £3 tickets sold.
  • November 5, 1994
    Weekly Lotto commences.
  • June 1995
    Community Youth Training Programme begins and the building of the dressing rooms and store room gets underway.
  • January 24, 1996
    Decision to build stage was made.
  • September 13, 1996
    Bertie Ahern T.D. visits us.
  • April 13, 1997
    Car park completed following two days of wonderful spirit and co-operation with fourteen tractors and trailers involved in bringing stone from Knockgarron - freely given by William and Michael O'Keeffe, Killeshal.
  • June 1997
    Finish of Community Youth Training Scheme.
  • January 17/18, 1998
    "The Down Express" performed by Modeligo Dramatic Club. First three act play - a huge success.
  • May 30, 1998
    Weekly Lotto Sales to date £98,644 - Net Profit £66,222.
  • June 5, 1998
    Official Opening of Stage and Extenstion and unveiling of New Community Crest.

    Modeligo is located approximately 16km northwest of Dungarvan and 8km east of Cappoquin. It is bounded on the North and North East by the parishes of Ardfinnan and Touraneena, on the South-East by Aglish and on the West by Cappoquin and portion of the Blackwater. Home
